SEIKO Adventure Solar Chronograph SSC081 SSC081P1 Classic Mens Watch

AUD $450.00

With its matte black face, compass markings and big luminous numbers, Seiko’s SSC081 solar chronograph looks like it was inspired by the flight deck of a WW2 Lancaster bomber.

The look may be retro, but it’s a watch that’s bang up to date, powered by light and packing a chronograph, alarm and compass indicator in a stylish package.
Seiko SSC081 we looked at comes with a smart brown leather strap, fixed stainless steel bezel, black dial with bright, luminous hands and index hour markers, and the date displayed in a small cut out window.

The luminous hands proved to be very bright indeed, and kept their ‘charge’ for some time, so there was no problem reading the time in the dead of night.
The compass scale rotates 360 degrees and is moved by a recessed knob at the top left of the watch.
There’s not an actual compass on board though, with the dial only there for reference.

Covered in non-reflective, scratch resistant Hardlex crystal, the chronograph has a diameter of 41 mm with a case thickness of 13 mm, so it’s not too big on the wrist and the weight is about right too.

With its advertised water resistance to 100 meters/330 feet, the Seiko should be fine for casual swimming, but deep sea divers may want to look elsewhere.

The SEIKO Adventure Solar Chronograph SSC081 Classic Mens Watch is a high quality casual watch with a solar edge. Seiko has honed its skills over the past 120+ years and we have come to expect the very best from them. They have a dedication to moving with the times in terms of artistic design as well as technology and the fact that this piece features solar is testament to that.

At first glance the watch draws you in with its shiny stainless steel case and bezel. It looks like there is a fair amount happening on the watch so this would also ignite some curiosity. You will see a compass on the dial as well as two crowns. We will discuss these features in a bit more detail lower down. In fact quite a fair amount needs to be discussed so let’s jump right in.

Double Crown and Compass

SEIKO Adventure Solar Chronograph SSC081 Mens Watch engages its adventurous admirers with its compass feature. Before there is any confusion about this compass it is important to note that this is what the second crown is for. The compass isn’t magnetic and self-rotating so it will be important for anybody that is planning on taking it out on a trip to use it that you are well versed in using it in connection with the position of the sun to determine true north. The second crown on the top left of the watch is used to rotate the compass accordingly. The second crown at 3 o’clock is for the usual setting of the date and time.

Black Dial

The matte black dial contrasts beautifully with the stainless steel case and the stitched brown leather strap. The 6, 9 and 12 are large Arabic numbers and the rest of the dial is embellished with various markers for the other hours and minutes. There is no 3 on display because this is where the date is found.

This is a fashionable piece and even though it is made for casual wear it can be worn as a dress watch if you are looking for a slightly down played yet stylish look. The stitching in the band and the glossy case is what makes it suit-worthy.

SEIKO Adventure Solar Chronograph SSC081 Mens Watch can really go anywhere with you.
