That watch wears larger than the number suggests because the bezel is thin and the crystal is a dome, not a flat sapphire. Plenty of Australian buyers with 15–17 cm wrists found it wide. Orient later added the 38.4 mm Version 7 (RA-AC0M) with a 20 mm strap and 44 mm lug-to-lug. That solved the problem for a lot of people. It did not solve it for everyone.

The Bambino 36 is the next step down. Case diameter is 36.4 mm. Thickness on our listings is 12.3 mm — still dominated by the dome, so it is not a slim dress watch in profile. Lug-to-lug is about 42.2 mm, which is the figure that actually decides whether the case hangs off a small wrist. The strap is 18 mm, a common aftermarket size, unlike the awkward 21 mm on many 40.5 mm Bambinos or the 17 mm on an older discontinued 36 mm “ladies” run. Water resistance stays at 30 metres: rain and hand-washing, not swimming.

Inside is Orient’s F6524 automatic — hand-winding, hacking seconds, roughly 40 hours of reserve — not the F6724 date calibre used on most 40.5 mm and Version 7 date models. The exhibition case back is still there. There is no useful lume. The crystal is still mineral, so it will mark if you knock it. Those are the same trade-offs as the rest of the family; the 36 mm case does not upgrade the spec sheet.

RA-BB0101S is the dressiest: gold-tone case, white dial, brown strap. It will look wrong with a dive rubber strap; leave it on leather. RA-BB0103S is the quiet office watch — silver case, white dial, black strap. RA-BB0102E is the one if you want colour without leaving the compact case. RA-BB0104Y adds a cream dial and blue-tipped dauphine hands; we do not have it on the shelf today, so do not plan a purchase around that SKU.

If 36.4 mm feels too small once it is on the wrist — it can, on a 18 cm-plus wrist — the honest step up is not a 42 mm Version 4. It is a Version 7 such as the blue RA-AC0M10L, or a 38 mm no-date such as the green RA-BB0001E. Those keep the shorter 44 mm lug-to-lug. The champagne RA-AC0M04Y is the same 38.4 mm date case in a warmer dial. Version 4 pieces such as RA-AC0P04Y are a different, larger brief: sunburst dials, 22 mm strap, more wrist presence than a dress watch usually wants.

It is a good first automatic for smaller wrists. It is also a sensible second watch if your daily is a diver and you want something that does not shout next to a shirt.

Skip it if you swim, work with your hands, or want sapphire. Skip it if you need a date for work.
