Seiko Prospex PADI SPB071J1

The SPB071J1 is Seiko’s PADI special-edition diver, not a classic Turtle. The catalogue reference is SPB071J1. This listing uses SKU SPB071J. It has a 42.6 mm steel case, a blue wave dial with a PADI logo, a black 60-minute bezel, and a navy silicone strap. The dial is printed Diver’s 200 m.

The movement is calibre 6R15, not the later 6R35. Seiko rates the 6R15 at about 50 hours of power reserve, 23 jewels, hacking seconds, and hand-winding, with accuracy of +25 to −15 seconds per day. The case uses Seiko’s super-hard coating, measures 13.8 mm thick and 49.8 mm lug to lug, and carries a curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. Lug width is 21 mm. The crown screws down and has no guard. The case back screws down.

The bezel is for elapsed time in the water or in the pool. Two hundred metres is the rating on the dial and on Seiko’s sheet for this reference. The fitted strap is silicone, not a steel bracelet. If you wanted the rounder 1970s Turtle, that is the 6309 and SRP777 family, usually about 44 to 45 mm. This case is the slimmer PADI diver, closer in idea to the 1965 professional diver than to that cushion Turtle.

Who it suits

Someone who wants a Seiko diver under 43 mm, with a stated diver’s rating, and who prefers the blue PADI dial to a black Turtle. The 21 mm silicone strap is simple to rinse. The 6R15 is easier to live with than an old 7S26 because it stops the seconds hand and winds from the crown. At 13.8 mm thick and 49.8 mm lug to lug, it suits a medium to larger wrist better than a small one.

Questions buyers ask

Is the Seiko SPB071 a Turtle?

No. The classic Seiko Turtle is the cushion-shaped 6309 and later SRP777 family, usually about 44 to 45 mm, and often fitted on a steel bracelet. The SPB071J1 is a PADI special edition in a different 42.6 mm case, with a wave dial, a PADI logo, and a blue silicone strap. Older text on this page called it a Turtle and listed a 6R35. That was wrong. This watch uses the 6R15.

What movement does the SPB071J1 use?

Seiko calibre 6R15. It is an automatic with manual winding and a hacking seconds hand, 23 jewels, and about 50 hours of power reserve. It is not the 6R35. That calibre has a longer reserve and shows up in later Prospex divers.

What is the water resistance of the Seiko SPB071?

Diver’s 200 metres, as printed on the dial. The crown and case back both screw down. That covers swimming and recreational diving inside the stated rating. Rinse it after salt water, and do not open the crown while it is wet.

What size is the SPB071J1, and will a 20 mm or 22 mm strap fit?

Case diameter is 42.6 mm, thickness 13.8 mm, lug to lug 49.8 mm. Lug width is 21 mm, so a standard 20 mm or 22 mm strap will not sit properly. Use a 21 mm strap, or keep the fitted navy silicone.

Is the SPB071 suitable as an everyday watch?

Yes, if you want a sports watch on the wrist all day. The silicone strap is light, the blue dial is easy to read, and 200 metres means you do not have to take it off to swim. It is not a dress watch. The steel case will mark if you knock it on a desk.
