Seiko Prospex SPB429J Whitsundays Limited Edition Sumo

A$1,600.00

Availability: In Stock

The Seiko Prospex SPB429J is the Whitsundays Sumo: a 1,000-piece diver made for Australia and New Zealand, not a regular black Sumo with a new bezel insert. The dial grades from deep blue to turquoise. The bezel is blue for most of the scale and green across the first part of the elapsed-time track. A gold seconds hand sits over white hour and minute hands.

Seiko released it in October 2023 through boutiques and selected Australian retailers. The store SKU is SPB429J. SPB429J1 is the same watch on some export paperwork. Chronospride lists the boutique code.

Why this Sumo is different

The Sumo case is the point of the size. It is a cushioned 45 mm diver, about 12.9 mm thick and about 52.6 mm from lug to lug, with the crown at 4 o’clock so it sits off the back of the hand. Twenty millimetre lugs keep strap changes simple. It is a real 200 metre diver: sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, screw case back, and a unidirectional bezel. It is not a Turtle, and it is not a 38 mm Seiko 5.

The colour is the reason to pick this one over a standard Sumo. Seiko’s Australian release ties the green bezel to coastal bush and the blue to the Coral Sea, with the gold seconds hand as the bright accent. On the listing photos the green insert runs from 12 down the right side, through the 10 and 20 marks, and the rest of the bezel is blue. The dial reads DIVER’S 200m, and it carries a small Japan line above 6.

Who it suits

Pick the SPB429J if you want a numbered Australasian Sumo and you like a large diver. The 52.6 mm lug-to-lug needs a wrist that can carry it. If you want the same 6R35 idea in a smaller case, this is the wrong watch. If you want a black tool Sumo with no edition number, this is also the wrong watch. The extra silicone straps in the release are there for heat and salt water. The steel bracelet is what the listing photos show.

Frequently asked questions

Is SPB429J the same as SPB429J1?

Yes. SPB429J is the Australasian boutique code. SPB429J1 is the same Whitsundays Sumo on some export paperwork. Chronospride lists it as SKU SPB429J. The page address still contains the J1 code. The watch is the same reference.

How many Whitsundays Sumos were made?

1,000 pieces, sold in Australia and New Zealand from October 2023. Seiko engraves the serial out of 1,000 on the case back. You cannot choose the number, and a catalogue photo of a low serial is not the watch we send.

What movement does the SPB429J use?

Calibre 6R35. It is an automatic with manual winding and a hacking seconds hand, 24 jewels, and about 70 hours of reserve. Seiko rates it at +25 to −15 seconds per day. It beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour, which is six beats a second.

What size is the Whitsundays Sumo?

45.0 mm across, 12.9 mm thick, about 52.6 mm lug-to-lug, and 20 mm between the lugs. One line in Seiko Australia’s press-release specification block says 40.5 mm. The same release says 45.0 mm in the body, and the Sumo case used here is 45 mm. This page follows 45 mm. It wears large. The crown at 4 o’clock keeps the crown off the back of the hand, which helps, but the lug-to-lug is still the number to check against your wrist.

Is the SPB429J a 200 metre diver?

Yes. The dial reads DIVER’S 200m. It has a screw-down crown, a screw case back, a unidirectional bezel, and a sapphire crystal. It is built as a diver, not as a desk GMT and not as a 100 metre sports watch.

What colour is the bezel?

Split. On the listing photos the green section covers the right-hand side from 12 through the early minute marks, including 10 and 20, and the rest of the insert is blue. The dial underneath is a blue-green gradient, lighter toward the centre, with a gold seconds hand.

Does the SPB429J come with extra straps?

Seiko’s Australian release lists a steel bracelet plus a white silicone strap and a blue silicone strap. The photos on this page show the watch on the steel bracelet only. Lug width is 20 mm if you add your own strap later.

Where can I buy the SPB429J in Australia?
