The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC957P1 is a solar chronograph for people who want a motorsport limited edition they can actually wear, not a shelf piece. Seiko built it around the 1969 Speedtimer and the Datsun 240Z that won the 1971 East African Safari Rally. The run is 4,000 pieces worldwide.

What you see on the dial
The dial is black, with SEIKO and the Prospex X mark above a DATSUN logo at 12. A red minute track sits inside a black tachymeter bezel. The bezel numerals are mostly white, with a red sector through the 50 to 60 marks. Seiko’s UK sheet lists that bezel as bi-colour aluminium.
Three subdials do the work. At 9, a small seconds hand. At 3, a 24-hour hand. At 6, the chronograph minute counter shares the subdial with an F-to-E power-reserve scale. The central chronograph seconds hand is red. Applied silver indexes and the main hour and minute hands use LumiBrite. The date window sits at about 4:30.
The bracelet is stainless steel with black centre links and a three-fold clasp with a push-button release. Two black chronograph pushers sit above and below a pull-out crown. This is not a screw-down diver crown. The case back is screwed down.
