Seiko SBTQ039 white quartz chronograph

The Seiko SBTQ039 is a compact steel chronograph with a white dial and a tachymeter bezel. It is quartz, not automatic. Calibre 7T92 runs on a battery and times events to 1/20 of a second, up to 12 hours, with split time if you need it.

Current Japan listings file this reference under Seiko Selection. Older Spirit-line pages use the same model number. The dial itself reads Seiko Chronograph and 10 BAR. The watch we stock is the white-dial version in the photo, not a cream or black sibling.

Dial and layout

The dial is white, with silver-tone bar markers and hands, and LumiBrite on the hands and indexes. The date sits at 3 o’clock. Three subdials handle the chronograph:

  • 12 o’clock: 1/20-second register, marked SEC
  • 9 o’clock: running small seconds
  • 6 o’clock: chronograph minute counter

A fixed bezel carries the tachymeter scale. The case is the useful part of this reference: 38.5 mm across, only 9.6 mm thick, and 46 mm lug to lug. That is a chronograph you can get under a shirt cuff. Weight is about 112 grams.

Calibre 7T92

Seiko rates calibre 7T92 at about ±15 seconds a month. The stopwatch measures up to 12 hours in 1/20-second steps and can take a split. After you start it, the 1/20-second hand runs for about 10 minutes, then pauses to save the battery. When you stop the chronograph, it shows the 1/20 reading. That pause is normal. It is not a fault, and it does not mean the watch is mechanical.

Expected battery life is about three years. Seiko specifies an SR927SW cell for this calibre. There is no rotor and no power-reserve display, because there is no mainspring.

Who it suits

Choose the SBTQ039 if you want a white-dial Seiko chronograph that stays thin and light, with a real stopwatch rather than a decorative subdial. It suits smaller wrists, and anyone who prefers quartz timekeeping to winding. Seiko’s own Japan comparison treats SBTQ041 as the black-dial version of this family. If you want a larger black chronograph with a 24-hour hand, look at the Seiko Spirit SBTR013 instead. If you want a self-winding Seiko, look at the automatic range. Do not read this page as one.

Questions buyers ask

Is the Seiko SBTQ039 automatic?

No. It is a battery quartz chronograph. Calibre 7T92 does not wind itself. Any older text on this page that called it automatic was incorrect.

What movement does the SBTQ039 use?

Seiko calibre 7T92. It is a quartz chronograph with small seconds, a date at 3 o’clock, and a stopwatch that measures up to 12 hours in 1/20-second steps, including split time. Accuracy is about ±15 seconds a month.

What colour is the SBTQ039 dial?

White. The case and bracelet are silver-tone stainless steel. It is not the black-dial sibling, which Seiko lists as SBTQ041. A few resale descriptions call this dial cream. The reference we stock, and Seiko’s Japan listing, is white.

How big is the Seiko SBTQ039?

38.5 mm wide, 9.6 mm thick, and 46 mm lug to lug. Lug width is 20 mm. Weight is about 112 grams. It is one of the easier Seiko chronographs to wear under a cuff.

Is the SBTQ039 water resistant enough for swimming?

Yes for swimming. The dial is marked 10 BAR, which is 100 metres. That is everyday reinforced water resistance, not a professional dive rating. Do not use the chronograph pushers underwater.

Why does the 1/20-second hand stop on the SBTQ039?

That is how calibre 7T92 saves the battery. After you start the chronograph, the 1/20-second hand runs for about 10 minutes, then pauses. Stop the chronograph and it shows the 1/20 reading. The other hands keep working. It is not a sign that the watch needs a service.
