Core external watch components

Case

The case is the metal (or other material) body that holds the movement and dial. Common materials include stainless steel, titanium, ceramic, and coated steels. Case diameter is usually measured across the face excluding the crown; thickness includes the crystal on many consumer listings. Shape and lug design affect how large a watch feels on the wrist more than diameter alone.

Crystal

The crystal is the transparent cover over the dial. Three materials dominate consumer watches:

  • Acrylic: warm look, can polish light scratches, scuffs more easily (common on classic divers like many Vostok Amphibia builds).
  • Mineral / Hardlex: Seiko’s Hardlex is a toughened mineral glass used widely on Seiko 5 Sports — good daily resistance, not sapphire-hard.
  • Sapphire: very scratch-resistant, preferred on many modern mid-range divers and dress pieces; can still chip on a sharp edge impact.

Dial

The dial is the face of the watch — the surface that carries markers, logos, and often a date window. Texture, colour, and finishing drive a lot of the “personality” you notice in photos. Subdials are smaller dials used for chronograph counters or other complications.

Markers (indices)

Markers are the hour indicators: Arabic numerals, Roman numerals, sticks, dots, or applied metal indices. Lume-filled markers help night reading on sports and dive watches.

Hands

Hands point to the time. Typical sets include hour, minute, and seconds hands, sometimes with different shapes (sword, dauphine, Mercedes-style dive hands). Lume on the hands matters as much as lume on the markers for low-light use.

Bezel

The bezel is the ring around the crystal. It may be fixed and decorative, or rotating:

  • Unidirectional dive bezel: turns one way so accidental knocks do not understate elapsed dive time.
  • Bidirectional bezel: turns both ways (common on GMTs and some vintage-style divers).
  • Fixed bezel: no rotation — common on dress watches.

Crown

The crown is the side knob used to set time and date, and on mechanical watches often to hand-wind. Screw-down crowns add water-resistance security when fully tightened. Pull positions usually move between winding, date set, and time set — exact behaviour depends on the movement.

Date window (and day-date)

Many automatics show the date through a window, often at 3 o’clock. Some add the day of the week (day-date), as on many Seiko 5 Sports calibres such as the 4R36 family. Cyclops lenses (magnifiers over the date) appear on some designs; they are optional styling, not a universal feature.

Lugs and lug width

Lugs are the horns where the strap attaches. Lug width (for example 18 mm, 20 mm, 22 mm) is the internal distance between lugs and determines strap size. Lug-to-lug length often predicts wrist fit better than case diameter alone.

Strap, bracelet, and clasp

The band can be leather, rubber, nylon/NATO, or a metal bracelet. Clasps range from simple buckles to deployant and bracelet folding clasps with micro-adjustment. A comfortable clasp and correct lug width matter as much as dial colour for daily wear.

What does lug width mean?
